Introducing Foods- 6 months

Introducing food to your baby is an exciting time. During this time, the baby can participate more in family mealtimes by sitting up in a highchair or lap.  Let’s discuss when is the right time to start introducing foods.

– When they can sit upright and alone with minimal support

– Your baby shows interest in foods (your food)

– When your baby brings objects to their mouth

– When your baby can bring food from spoon into mouth

What types of foods should be tried?

I know it is tempting to give the baby food from your plate, but this is not a good time. This is high risk for chocking. Your baby has not swallowed anything else besides milk, so you must prepare them to learn how to swallow. First, use pureed food or iron fortified cereals. These types of foods are easier to swallow. Other tips are

– Introduce one single food at a time. If there is an allergic reaction, you know what caused it

– Offer a variety of different fruits and vegetables

– Do not offer juice, soda or plant-based milk or whole milk (see Food to avoid)

– It is best to use a bowl and spoon. This helps to develop fine motor skills and eye coordination. He/she is learning how to grab objects during this time.

As your baby approaches 7 months, you can introduce finely chopped, soft meats and some finger foods. By this time, the baby realizes how to swallow. Again, introduce food slowly.

Read the food labels and packages to know the appropriate age when a food should be given to the baby.

How often should you feed?

There not a rule. I recommend offering foods during family mealtimes. Your baby will let you know if they are interested. Don’t force, just try feeding at a different time. Remember, they are getting their nutrition from formula and breastmilk as well.

Food to avoid. Honey, grapes, nuts/seeds, popcorn hard candies, gum, raw vegetables, apple, peanut butter, cheese, hot dogs, chunks of meats, plant-based milk, and whole milk,
