Tummy time is very important for newborns and for older babies. Tummy time offers a time to strengthen your infants’ muscles, develops head control, and prevents a flat head from developing (Plagiocephaly).
What is considered tummy time?
Tummy time can be exactly that, lying your baby on their tummy for an extended period. In the beginning, it maybe difficult for the infant to sustain this position. The infant may become irritable quickly and start crying due to frustration. It is recommended to perform tummy time as tolerated, several attempts per day. But continue to extend the time each day. As a young infant, it is recommended to place the baby in various positions. One position is laying the baby on the parent’s chest or belly. Another position is carrying the baby in an upright position. This will help stimulate head control and increases strength of the back muscles.
Older infants should be placed on the floor. It is best to determine the amount of tummy time the baby should have each day. It is important to continually increase the amount of tummy time. To help make this a more enjoyable experience for your baby, sing or talk to your baby, offer bright toys, toys that have lights, or that make noise. Place these toys in front of the child and on each side. The goal is to encourage movement for the child. Remember to always to have an older child or adult to stay with the child during tummy time.
Tummy time can be a fun time and become a great bonding time with your baby. Remember, it will take time for your baby to get comfortable with tummy time. In the end, it is very important to help growth and development.
