Happy New Year! A great tradition is to bring in the new year with a big celebration. Some people create goals for themselves during this time of year. As a healthcare provider, I like to establish goals for my practice and myself. The purpose of setting goals is to challenge a person’s inner strengths, weaknesses, and abilities. More importantly, it helps to establish healthy habits and create positive lifestyle changes.
Writing goals is a very easy and simple thing to do. Goals should follow the common acronym.
S. M. A. R. T. E. R
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-oriented, Evaluate, and Reward
To ensure that goals can be conquered, they should be detailed, realistic, and not too overwhelming. If a goal is too broad or too embellished, it will be hard to obtain and stick with it.
I will like to add, knowing your “WHY” is very important. If you know the reason you are making these goals, it will be harder to quit and give up on them.
Here are some examples of some goals that will improve my health
To participate in an exercise that increases the heart rate for at least one hour.
To decrease screen time usage or television watching for 2 hours a day.
To minimize sugary products or processed food only 1 time a week.
I will read one book novel each month for the next 6 months.
I will get more sleep by going to bed before 9:00 pm.
I will try a new vegetable at least once a week.
I will practice playing my instrument for 1 hour per day.
Another keynote is to remember to write the goals where they can be visibly seen, such as in a notebook, or post them on a mirror, or onto a refrigerator door. Review them at the same time each day. This can make you accountable and help create a routine.
Rewarding yourself if you accomplish your goal is important as well. This allows you and your loved ones to celebrate your accomplishments. Also, it keeps you motivated to strive for new goals and show your weakness and inner strength.
Lastly, evaluating is a time to reflect on what can be done better. How could the goals be reached next time, and why is important to get this goal done? Was this a realistic goal? Did I set enough time aside to accomplish this goal? It is just as important to re-evaluate the methods that were taken to achieve the goals than when the goals were initially set.
Best of luck with reaching your goals this year.
